Stay-at-Home Fathers

Tuesday July 15, 2003
A U.S. Census Bureau report released last month showed that 336,000 children under age 15 had fathers who stayed home to care for them. These children all lived in two-family househoulds and their mothers worked outside the home. While this number may seem high, it hasn't changed much over the last decade, while the number of children with stay-at-home moms has increased significantly. It seems it's still more culturally acceptable for a mother to stay home than it is for a father. Sometimes, though, it makes more sense for the father to leave his job. What factors should determine who gets to stay home?
