Can Working Too Hard Lead to Marital Problems?

Friday September 8, 2006
We are a nation of overworked people. I read several articles recently about American workers forgoing vacation time in order to spend more time at work. Those who do take vacations spend at least some of their time away from the office using their cell phones, Black Berries, and laptops. While I was away on vacation last month (not working at all) I saw many people on cell phones or working on their laptops in the hotel lobby. I feel that taking time off from work can help you be more productive when you return. Overwork can lead to job stress which can lead to both physical and emotional problems.

According to About.com's Marriage Guides, Sheri and Bob Stritof, working too much can also have a negative effect on your marriage. They say that "spouses of workaholics often feel estranged from their mates and express less affection." Here are the Stritofs' tips for keeping your work from hurting your marriage.
