Getting Back to Work

Tuesday July 10, 2007
I've been hearing a lot lately about people skipping vacations from work. What are they thinking? Everyone needs a break from time to time. Having just taken a week off, I can attest to this. Okay, I admit getting back into the work groove hasn't been easy. My head has been a bit foggy and part of me wishes I was still off hiking in the desert. Then there's the fact that I had to double up on work the week before I left and have a lot of catching up to do now that I'm back, not to mention the unanswered email I have waiting for me (no -- I don't check email when I'm away). But, it's all worth it. When I take time away from work, I come back to it with a renewed sense of purpose. I am less stressed out than when I left and more enthusiastic. When I'm feeling a bit burned out, sometimes a few days off is just what the doctor ordered.

If you are wondering whether to take a vacation, consider the benefits: greater productivity upon your return, stress reduction and possible reversal of job burnout. Of course not even the best vacation may cure serious work-related problems. Read Job Stress: Symptoms of and Cures for Job Stress and Job Burnout to find out how to cope with these issues.
