Your Career as an Athletic Coach

Friday July 27, 2007
The other day I watched the movie Friday Night Lights. In it Billy Bob Thornton plays a high school football coach who leads his team to the state playoffs. They end up losing the game, but that's not really what this movie is about. It's about a man's dedication to his team and to his sport. Coach Gary Gaines, Thornton's character, is pressured by the town the high school is in to win no matter what. He speaks to his players about perfection. By perfection he tells them that winning isn't everything, but they must know you did everything you could not to let your friends down. Gaines, like all coaches, not only has to be an expert on the sport, he also has to be able to motivate his players, help them deal with their personal problems and negotiate the politics of the town in which he works. Do you want to know more about working as an athletic coach? Read Athletic Coach: Career Brief.
