Stay-at-Home Dads

Monday August 27, 2007
Are You an Emu? An emu is a large flightless bird with a parenting method that's somewhat non-traditional, compared to ours. After the female emu lays her eggs, her mate tends to those eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the male raises the chicks. Quite contrary to humans, where if a parent stays home with the children, it is usually the mother who does so. Usually, but certainly not always. Sometimes it is the father who decides to put his career on hold, while the mother goes out to work everyday.

According the U.S. Census Bureau 143,000 men were stay-at-home dads in 2005. This number was up from 98,000 in 2003 so maybe there is an upward trend here. Stay-at-home dads have many of the same concerns as stay-at-home moms. First, they must fight lonliness. Second, they must figure out how to make sure they can return to their careers when the time comes. In addition to helping you with these issues, this article about stay-at-home dads tell you how to determine if this option is a good idea for you and your family.
