Asking for a Raise: How to Approach Your Boss

Friday August 31, 2007
The worst advice I ever saw regarding asking for a raise came from someone who should have known better -- a person who wrote a book about career planning. This author advised readers to tell their bosses that they should receive raises because they needed to earn more money. Wrong! You should never tell your boss you need a raise. You should instead tell him or her that you deserve a raise. You earn your salary, your employer doesn't give it to you. Your salary should be based on what you do for the company and what you bring to the table.

Do you think you deserve a raise? Before you decide to march into your boss's office, read How to Ask for a Raise. Learn what you need to do before you meet with your boss, how to schedule your meeting and how to present your case. Even find out how to handle it if you get turned down.
