Best Cities for Older Workers: Is There Such a List?

Wednesday August 6, 2008
I recently wrote a post about the Best Cities for Young Professionals. Lynne commented on that post, with a very good question. She asked "What are the best cities for old [not the term I would have used] professionals (over 60)?" To try to find an answer for her, I did a Google search and what I came up with were AARP's Best Employers for Workers Over 50 and the Top 25 Places for Retirement Jobs from MarketWatch. The latter includes a disclaimer that "... our list is not for retirement-age workers who still have their nose to their primary occupation grindstone, according to Robert Skladany, vice president of research and services at RetirementJobs.com." RetirementJobs.com compiled this list for MarketWatch. Mr. Skladany continues, "Those workers often have to 'go where the jobs are' in their industry or profession, regardless of the location ..."

I would think that statement applies to all workers, not just older ones. Unless one is open to working in any field, and willing to get the training that is necessary to do that, it doesn't matter what cities are best for workers in your age group. What matters is whether or not there are openings in your field. It doesn't matter if you're 25 or 55. On the other hand, if you are seeking out a new post-retirement career the MarketWatch list can be very helpful. If you're an older worker, you should look at AARP's list which includes employers all over the United States.
