Don't Talk Politics at Work

Friday October 3, 2008
We discuss politics a lot in my house. The upcoming election has us talking about it more than usual, but even before this very long lead-up to election day, politics was a popular topic around our kitchen table. Because both my husband and I are squarely on the same side of the political fence (and our daughter, for the time being, just follows along), the conversations never cause arguments. It makes me wonder what families do when they hold differing political beliefs about which they feel strongly. It must be difficult to maintain harmony.

I'm always surprised when people think it's okay to discuss politics at work. In a place where the need to maintain harmony is particularly important, political discussions can get out of hand. It can lead to an inability to work together as a team. While it might be fine to let your co-workers know what your political beliefs are, you should never try to win them over to your side or tell them why you think their ideology is wrong.
