Restroom Rules

Wednesday October 8, 2008
I was watching The View one day last week and one of the hosts brought up a topic that has irked me for years ... wet seats in public restrooms. The men who are reading this might be puzzled, but all the women will be nodding their heads. You know what I mean, ladies, don't you? You have two options when you encounter a wet seat. You can either clean up someone else's mess or you can exit the stall and find another one that is cleaner. The problem with the latter is that someone who sees you walking out may assume you're the one who left the mess. Why bring up this yucky topic on a career-related site? Workplaces have restrooms, don't they? This falls squarely under the topic of office etiquette.

Coincidently, I was browsing a few career-related blogs this morning and came across a post on this topic. Yes, someone else wrote about restroom etiquette at work. Patrick Erwin, on the blog Work Buzz says "Some workers can get very irritated at how those 'facilities' are used by others." No kidding! Thanks Patrick for bringing up this sensitive topic. Patrick doesn't discuss the aforementioned "wet seat" problem, but generally men wouldn't have to deal with that. He does bring up cell phone use in the restroom, which is a definite no-no, as I mentioned in my article about cell phone etiquette at work. Patrick makes some other excellent points so take a look at his post, Workplace Etiquette: Revisiting Restroom Rules.
