EUI: Emailing Under the Influence

Monday October 13, 2008
It's Friday night. You had a miserable week at work. Your boss has been getting on your case and you spent the week just grinning and bearing it. Now the weekend is here and you spent the last few hours since you left work drinking away your troubles. The problem is, you can't stop thinking about your miserable boss and how he or she spent the week tormenting you. You decide to sit down at your computer to send him an email. You want to tell him what you really think -- all the things you haven't been able to say all week. With a few drinks in you, the words just flow out of your fingers onto the keyboard and onto the screen. You hit send ...

That email in which you once and for all tell off your wicked boss can cost your your job or at least make him treat you worse than he already does. It's hard to tell which outcome would be worse. Google is testing a new feature called Mail Goggles that will stop you, if you use Gmail, from sending email when you are drunk. Here's how I understand it works: You set the time during which you want Mail Goggles to be activated, for example 6 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. When you try to send an email during those hours, a window will pop up with some math equations. If you can solve them, your email can go through. If not, it will have to wait.
