Stick Together During Tough Times

Tuesday December 9, 2008
The economic news and the employment news has been depressing and scary. I've hesitated writing here about the horrible unemployment figures, because why tell you what you already know? If you have access to newspapers, television, radio, the Internet (or other people), you know the situation is the worst we have seen in a long time. All I can do is tell you what to do if you are faced with a sudden job loss and how to prepare for an imminent one and I believe I've done that a few times lately. Today I came across some great advice for those dealing with job loss and I wanted to pass it along to you.

On the Career Hub blog, career expert Billie Sucher writes about delivering a workshop on transition to a group of workers whose place of business was soon to close. During the course of the workshop, it came clear to Ms. Sucher that out of all the things these workers would miss, they would miss one another most. The participants agreed that after the company closed they would meet once a week until they all found new jobs. This would allow them to provide support to one another during a difficult time as well as share much needed job search advice. Read the complete post Camaraderie Amidst Chaos.

I think this is an idea many people dealing with a layoff could benefit from. Many of us become very close to those with whom we work — it's hard not to given the amount of time we spend on the job. The support of those dealing with the same issues can prove to be very helpful.
