Setting Goals and Your New Year's Resolutions

By , About.com GuideDecember 27, 2008

Follow me on:

After I wrote yesterday's post about my new year's resolution to stop procrastinating, I began to worry that I would fail to keep this promise to myself. I decided I needed to look at my new year's resolution as a short-term goal. I would treat it like any goal I wanted to achieve. I set out to find some help and came across an article I wrote about setting goals and there I found my first mistake.

I had stated my goal as "I resolve to stop procrastinating." There on page two of my article, a few paragraphs down I say "Don't be negative. Make sure your goal is something you want rather than something you want to avoid." So I restated my goal: "I resolve to complete all tasks in a timely manner." Now, that's more positive isn't it? But is it realistic? On that same page, in the next paragraph, I say your goals must be realistic. Could I really complete all tasks in a timely manner? It looks like I'm going to have to make another change: "Complete most tasks in a timely manner." There. Much better. Now my resolution looks doable ... hopefully.
