What you post on Facebook can get you into trouble with your current employer or prospective employers. Everyone should know that by now. I've written about it here more than a few times. Some people argue that they should be able to post whatever they want it's nobody's business if someone wants to wear a beer hat, right? Well, some employers do care about stuff like that and if they come across your Facebook page and they find something inappropriate there, they might either fire you or, in the case of a prospective employer, decide not to hire you. So what are you to do if you want to be free to post everything your heart desires? You can start with your privacy settings. Make sure they are so tight that no one who isn't a "friend" will be able to see anything they shouldn't. Then don't "friend" your boss. You can always say you like keeping your work and business life separate.
Now, about those privacy settings. They are a bit confusing, although Facebook has said they will make them easier to use. If you aren't sure if you've done a good job tightening up your privacy settings, there is a way for you to find out if you have. ReclaimPrivacy.org provides a free tool that scans your Facebook privacy settings and tells you whether you need to tweak them to make them stronger. I'm so glad I read about it on The Distant Librarian. I just checked my own profile and I'll have my daughter check hers.
