Dentists examine patients' teeth and mouth tissue in order to diagnose and treat problems. Many dentists are general practitioners, while others specialize in areas including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery and periodontics. To become a dentist one must earn a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree by attending four years of dental school after college. Job growth in this field will be faster than the average for all occupations through 2018, but outlook will vary by specialty (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition).
