What's a Holland Code?

You may have heard the term Holland Code as you try to find a career that is right for you. Several self assessment tools like the Strong Interest Inventory and the Self Directed Search use this three letter code in their results reports. The Self Directed Search, as a matter of fact, was developed by Dr. John Holland, the man behind the code.

Dr. Holland believed that both people and occupations could be categorized into six different types. The three letters in your Holland Code represent the three personality types into which you best fit. You can use it to find occupations that are categorized into matching types. Once you find careers that are compatible with your type, you must then explore those occupations to find out which ones are truly right for you. You could rule out, for example, occupations that require more education than you are willing to pursue.
