Each October we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Make an appointment for a mammogram right now if you are over the age of 40. Encourage the women in your life to get mammograms. Know what the risk factors are for developing breast cancer and learn about ways to lower your risk. Pay a visit to the Breast Cancer Site on About.com. Guide Pam Stephan has some excellent resources for anyone who wants to know anything at all about this disease that one in eight women and 1% of men will develop.

When one is diagnosed with breast cancer there are many things to attend to. Getting proper treatment, of course, should be a priority. Unfortunately, career-related issues must be addressed as well. For example, someone recently diagnosed with breast cancer, or any other type of cancer, must decide whether to disclose this to her boss. She must determine whether treatment will require time off from work or at least a lighter schedule. If so, how much time off is allowed? What income can one expect during that time? For help with these issues, take a look at Cancer and Your Career: Know Your Rights.
