Many years ago, my uncle's employer offered him a job at their factory in Puerto Rico. This would have required moving his wife and daughter from New York, learning Spanish and leaving behind the rest of his family, including two adult children, his brother, two sisters and several nieces and nephews. He decided against relocating and opted instead to transfer to another facility that was further away than where he had been working, but not as far away as Puerto Rico. Since this increased his commute considerably, it certainly wasn't ideal, but to him and his immediate family it was the better of the two options. I think he was just happy to still have a job.
Many people, when their employers relocate, are less fortunate than my uncle was. They are faced with the question of whether to move or lose their jobs altogether. Read Job Relocation: Should I Stay or Should I Go?.
