Yahoo CEO Bans Telecommuting

It doesn't seem unreasonable to believe that technology companies should be on the forefront of innovation when it comes to their products and how they run their businesses. Yet Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer just issued an edict that will put an end to a progressive, though not at all new, way of working. Beginning in June 2013, employees of the company will no longer be allowed to telecommute. It seems like a step backward when a large majority of companies, particularly those in the tech industry, have allowed employees to work remotely for years. Many, including Yahoo, even attracted talent by offering this alternative work option. Now those who accepted job offers because they could work from home, must either report to a Yahoo office or quit their jobs.

Why would someone choose to telecommute? One obvious reason is that it eliminates commuting, often a stressful, time consuming and costly part of the day. It also reduces some child care expenses, although it's usually impossible to work full time from home with a very young child in your care. Most people end up with some form of child care. Many telecommuters also have flexible work schedules that allow them to work while their kids are in school, sleeping or with their other parent. For many, working alone means there are fewer distractions. Co-workers won't be stopping by for a brief chat that eats away at work time. There are downsides to telecommuting including a lack of collaboration and the absence of "quitting time" which keeps remote employees sitting at their desks late into the night.
