Can Pregancy Affect Your Job?

I get a ton of email from people asking questions about pregnancy as it relates to their jobs. So I wasn't terribly surprised to see an article in the news about a pregnancy discrimination law suit. It was a little surprising, however, to find out that the plaintiff in the suit is Mothers Work, a maternity wear company.

Today I received yet another letter from a pregnant woman: "I am beginning to have complications from my pregnancy and my doctor would like me to cut back the hours that I am working." The writer's supervisor wasn't very understanding and she's afraid she'll be terminated if she presses the issue. How scary is that -- lose her job or possibly jeopardize her baby's health or her own? Fortunately she may be protected by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Shyness May Be Inherited

An article in The New York Times reports on a study that was published in the journal Science. According to the study kids may inherit shyness. That doesn't mean a shy child will act shy as an adult though. Harvard University researcher Jerome Kagan, who authored the study, says that "people overcome their shyness.''

That's good news since shyness can negatively affect your career. Find out more about it in this article.

Stay at Home Parents

After my daughter was born I left my full time job to stay home with her. I wondered whether it would mean the end of my professional life -- it didn't. Here's how I handled the transition.

While I decided to be a stay-at-home mom, many others choose to work outside the home while raising a family. It's quite a balancing act, but a study by the The National Institute for Child Health and Human Development shows that such an arrangement doesn't negatively affect children.
