Interview Potential Employees

By Dawn Rosenberg McKay, About.com

Department managers are often called on to interview potential employees. Unlike human resources professionals, they've received no training to do this. Here's what you need to know to conduct a successful interview.
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: na
Here's How:
  1. Prior to the interview, prepare some general questions, i.e. what's your greatest asset; what was your favorite job?
  2. Take time to review the candidate's resume in order to come up with some specific questions, i.e. what did you like best about working at XYZ Company?
  3. Dress appropriately for the interview. If casual dress is the protocol at your company, that's o.k. for the interview, but be sure to be neat.
  4. Welcome the candidate warmly and put him or her at ease. You'll get more honest answers if the applicant is relaxed.
  5. Ask each question clearly and give your candidate time to answer completely.
  6. Tell your candidate what the next step will be. Remember how it feels to be left hanging.
Tips:
  1. Your decision will reflect on your ability as a manager. Make sure you get all the information you need to make a sound decision.
  2. Be kind to the candidate -- you may be working with this person some day.
  3. Remember that the applicant is trying to find out if your company is a good place to work. Make a good impression on your company's behalf.
