Department managers are often called on to interview potential employees. Unlike human resources professionals, they've received no training to do this. Here's what you need to know to conduct a successful interview.
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: na
Here's How:
- Prior to the interview, prepare some general questions, i.e. what's your greatest asset; what was your favorite job?
- Take time to review the candidate's resume in order to come up with some specific questions, i.e. what did you like best about working at XYZ Company?
- Dress appropriately for the interview. If casual dress is the protocol at your company, that's o.k. for the interview, but be sure to be neat.
- Welcome the candidate warmly and put him or her at ease. You'll get more honest answers if the applicant is relaxed.
- Ask each question clearly and give your candidate time to answer completely.
- Tell your candidate what the next step will be. Remember how it feels to be left hanging.
Tips:
- Your decision will reflect on your ability as a manager. Make sure you get all the information you need to make a sound decision.
- Be kind to the candidate -- you may be working with this person some day.
- Remember that the applicant is trying to find out if your company is a good place to work. Make a good impression on your company's behalf.
