How to Cope With Job Loss

Job loss is one of the most stressful of all life altering events. Learn how to cope with this situation and move past it.

Here's How:
  1. Find out what government benefits, i.e. unemployment insurance (U.S.), employment insurance (Canada), you're eligible for.
  2. If you qualify, get your paperwork together and apply for your benefits.
  3. Determine how long your financial resources will last?
  4. If your health benefits are paid by your employer, find out how to maintain those benefits. Most likely you will be able to purchase benefits through COBRA (The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act)
  5. Determine whether a career change is in order. Are layoffs typical in your field?
  6. If you would like to change careers, find out what occupation you want to go into. You may need professional help with this decision.
  7. Take this time to spruce up your skills. Find out what employers skills are most valuable.
  8. Now you can begin your job search.
Tips:
  1. Realize that this is very stressful and being upset, and even angry, is normal.
  2. Take a little break to evaluate your situation, but try not to wallow in self pity.
  3. Learn from this experience.
