Political Issues that Could Affect Your Job

By , About.com Guide

During every election year we hear all the candidates running for office talk about their positions on various issues. As Americans, it is imperative that we make informed decisions when we cast our ballots. We can do that by looking at all these issues, deciding which ones are important to us, our families, our communities, and the country as a whole. Different issues affect different aspects of our lives, including our careers. Policies that threaten our careers, or don't support them, can be detrimental to our livelihoods. Take a look at the following issues to see how they could affect your job. Before you vote, consider how each candidate stands on each of these issues. Don't make a decision until you do.

Higher Education

What do the candidates say about higher education? Does a candidate want to make postsecondary education, i.e. college, affordable for those who wish to pursue it. How will he or she do that?

Civil Rights

Where do the candidates stand on civil rights? What will a candidate do to insure that all Americans are treated equally, including in the work place and during the hiring process?

Family

Which candidates support families by putting into place fair leave policies to allow parents to care for their children? Does a particular candidate endorse policies that help parents pay for childcare?

Economy

A strong economy usually goes hand-in-hand with a low unemployment rate. What will a candidate do to keep our economy strong and at the same time keep Americans employed in jobs for which they are qualified?

Education

The quality of our future workforce depends on the quality of the education our children are receiving today. What will the candidates do to make sure all children in this country, regardless of where they live, receive the best education possible?

Sending Jobs Overseas/Job Creation

Many corporations feel they can lower their labor costs by hiring workers in other countries. However, this strategy could mean fewer jobs for Americans. Will a particular candidate address this issue, perhaps with incentives to keep American workers employed and in effect create new jobs?

Job Training

Will a candidate support or initiate job training programs that will help displaced workers develop new and marketable skills?
